Dr. Howard Peiper Writes About Omega-3’s

Dr. Howard Peiper, N.D., nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, has written several best-selling books on nutrition and natural health. His website is: www.walkthetalkproductions.com.
Dr. Peiper is an esteemed member of the MOXXOR Holistic Advisory Board. Below is his opinion about New Zealand green- lipped mussel oil.
An Omega-3 Star is Born
There is new proprietary, stabilized natural marine lipid oil from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel. It contains a rare combination of lipid (fat) groups containing many polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These PUFAs, which include omega-3s and some eicosatetraenoic acids (ETAs), have been shown to be extremely powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that are particularly effective (158 times more effective than any fish oil on the market) against arthritis. Why is this lipid oil so effective? It is a purer product than any fish oil because the green-lipped mussel lives in such a sheltered and protected environment. The New Zealand environment is ideally suited for contaminated-free aqua farming that simply isn’t possible in ocean waters anywhere else. The lipids found in the green-lipped mussel are especially rich and efficacious due to a combination of the mussels’ genetics and their food – tiny organisms called microplankton. Another problem with traditional fish oil supplements is the amount that must be taken to experience any benefit. But because of green-lipped mussel ability to be 100% bioavailable, it is 158 times more effective than any other omega-3 oils on the market. These omega-3s are of such a high concentration and natural balance that it is on average 247 times more effective salmon oil. I truly believe that the main source of omega-3 through green-lipped mussel is the biggest revolution ever seen in EFA supplements. Without supplements having all the drawbacks of traditional fish oil, I am convinced that the stage is set for Americans to finally reap the many benefits that omega-3 fatty acids have to offer.

Today is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Day !
Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in the USA. Early detection/screening is vital.
I think it is great that it is 90 percent treatable if detected early. To get screened for colorectal cancer is something we should do. If someone has health insurance or funds to pay for this – all well and good! How about the people that are uninsured/under-insured/too poor to pay out of pocket? The millions of dollars raised for Cancer foundations – why can’t some of that be used to help human kind? My point is this: All the monies raised that are used for cancer awareness doesn’t do a bit of good for those that cannot afford the screening. Put the donated money to better use and enable the less fortunate to be screened.
This test should be available to all US citizens. From what I gather Medicaid doesn’t pay for this routine screening because it is not life threatening. Wait until the person has full blown cancer with the odds against them before more costly treatment will be covered by medicaid. But yet early detection is the key and is less expensive. It kinda looks like preventable death to a medicaid recipient is not on our government’s agenda. I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong.
The Pennsylvania Cancer Consortium has a national touring exhibit known as the “Prevent Cancer Super Colon.” Is this agency funded by public funds/donations? Will it help those less fortunate to obtain colorectal screening? I’d be suprised if it did.
I called the local Cancer Society and asked if they assist with cancer screenings . The reply I received was that they help with the cost of medicine and sometimes provide transportation if necessary and nothing more. Whoopie doo! Keeping Big Pharma in business and providing transportation to do so if necessary. All this promotion about early detection – but yet financial help doesn’t seem available until it is probably too late and the patient’s odds of loss of their life is not in their favor.
Colorectal cancer often begins with mild symptoms that are often mistaken as an intestinal bug or hemorrhoids. By all means, get screened for one of the most preventable cancers today!!!

Government not abiding free-market rules
Frank X. Ryan, a CPA specializing in corporate restructuring, wrote an article in the Sunday edition of the Lebanon Daily News on 5/3/09. His well written article is titled ” Government not abiding free-market rules“.
Mr. Ryan wrote ” I have noticed a series of truisms that have been continously violated by governments in their feeble attempts to control economic performance. These principles are based upon my obseravations of the self interests of mankind which influence the performance of free markets”.
He lists 7 principles:
1. “Governments can never react as quickly as free markets.”
“Governments solve yesterday’s problems with yesterday’s solutions thereby setting the stage for tommorrow’s crisis he goes on to say.
2.”Free markets will always win.”
3. “You cannot tax your way to prosperity.”
In my opinion this is common sense.
4.”A nation’s tax rate operates in inverse relationship to its productivity.”
Generally speaking, Decrease tax rates = increase in productivity and Increase tax rates = decrease in productivity.
5. “Governments always overreact and underpreform.”
Solutions will be “too little and too late.”
6. “Remove negative consequences and personal accountability, and a Nation will get more of the same.”
Those so called bailouts will create more disasters.
7. “Nations can fail.”
Can you name any that have?
Mr. Ryan goes on to write: With the principles that I have observed it is obvious to me why our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution the way they did.” He encourages all citizens to read our Constitution carefully. “Our founding fathers understood the role of government.” He states that governments should provide for common defense, the framework for commerce and the rule of law. Nothing more and nothing less.

Why You Should Avoid Red Meat Part 2
November 11, 2008 I shared an interesting article with you from Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine http://www.drmirkin.com/public/ezine110908.html titled a Clue to Explain Why You Should Avoid Red Meat.
Dr. Mirkin has written another article about the possible risks of eating red meat on March 29, 2009. He states “A study of more than 500,000 Americans over 40 shows that those who consume the equivalent of at least a hamburger a day have a 30 percent increased chance of dying during the next 10 years, mostly from heart disease and cancer”. You can read his entire article titled “Study Finds Eating Red Meat Contributes to Risk of Early Death” by clicking here.

Make No Beef About It! Too Much Red Meat is Not Healthy.
March 27,2009 Dr. Mercola posted “The Dangers of Too Much Red Meat”
According to Dr. Mercola, the unhealthy components of common beef are:
-
More omega-6 fat content
- Hormones
- Antibiotics
- Vaccines and other drugs
- Irradiation
Dr. Mercola stated “ studies show that grass-fed cattle have an omega-6-omega-3 ratio of 3:1, while grain-fed cattle can have ratios that may exceed 20:1.”
Make no beef about it ! Grass fed is healthier than traditonally raised beef. FYI – numerous senior citizens have told me that beef just doesn’t taste like it used to. HMMMM….. wonder why?

What’s in your drinking water?
Most water companies across the country are looking at chloramines
as a cheap and easy answer to EPA’s newest regulations.
What are chloramines? Are they good for humans as well as other life forms? How do they affect our ecosystem? Are they necessary or are there safer ways to sanitize our drinking water?
Chloramine is a chemical compound of chlorine and ammonia. It is highly toxic and lethal to marine animals and fish and it creates toxic by-products. It is the cheapest and easiest of methods used for water disinfection.
I have been following the news articles in the local newspapers and today Lara Brenckle of the Harrisburg Patriot News wrote “The battle to keep chloramine out of the West Shore’s drinking water has reached the state Supreme Court.” A Chloramine Information Center Rally is scheduled for this Friday 3/20/09 at the Capitol Rotunda at Harrisburg, PA.
Opponents claim chloramine in water can cause numerous health problems. The water company (Pennsylvania American Water Co.) states ” the change is necessary to meet future drinking water standards and that chloramine is time-tested and safe”. HMMM …. who to believe? Health or profits?

Marine Ecosystems Severely Threatened by Overfishing
Exclusive Interview with Marine Biologist Dr. Boris Worm by Mike Adams
“The plundering of the world’s seafood populations is not sustainable, warns Dr. Worm in this exclusive interview with NaturalNews editor Mike Adams.” “ From the commercial harvesting of krill to the cruel practice of “finning” sharks, humans are impacting marine ecosystems in a short-sighted and dangerous way, warns Dr. Worm.”
Click here to read a quick summary of the most important points heard in this interview with Dr. Worm
The full interview (approx. 45 minutes) is available for downloading right now from NaturalNews: http://www.naturalnews.com/Index-Po… (Health Ranger Show #73).
Commercial fishing of krill can adversely affect the entire ecosystem. When selecting an omega 3 product make sure good aquaculture farming methods are being practiced and they are not taking resources away from the marine ecosystems. Aquaculture mussels used for an omega 3 supplement such as MOXXOR are a sustainable choice .

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
There is a lot of information in the media right now about the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids. More research is needed in this area but from what I have read so far, Omega-3’s are very important to our health.
After researching this topic I had purchased a new omega-3 product to try last month. Wow! I have experienced some positive health benefits from this product. That has motivated me to start this blog to write about this topic as well as others in the future.
What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids. “Essential” means our bodies cannot manufacture them and so must be eaten as a food or taken as a supplement. Omega-3s play a role in several physiological functions. More and more research is showing that the intake of omega-3 fatty acids helps to prevent a wide range of medical problems. There are numerous plant and animal sources and some are better than others for various reasons.
Why Do We Hear So Much About Them Today
Research has shown there needs to be a balanced ratio between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in our nutritional intake. The ideal ratio is not known but currently is estimated to be 1:1 to 4:1 of omega-6s to omega-3s. Our typical Western Diet provides ratios between 10:1 and 30:1 of omega-6s to omega-3s. That readers, is quite a difference!
Our ancestors diet was rich in wild game, seafood and other sources of omega-3s. They hunted, fished and gathered their food which provided a healthy ratio of 3s to 6s. Today we primarily hunt and gather our food in the grocery stores full of processed foods. These can be high in omega-6 fatty acids such as corn oil.
We need to decrease the amount of omega-6 fatty acids in our diet and increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in our diets.
Sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids
I will list these next time . I am currently trying a new porduct called Moxxor which is a green lip mussel oil from New Zealand. There are other good supplements that could fit your needs as well. Omega-3s for appetite control
Today Mike Adams of Natural News (http://www.naturalnews.com) wrote:
Omega-3s for appetite control
Speaking of nutrition, many people are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, mostly because they’ve been eating a diet that’s way too high in omega-6 oils (corn oil, soy oil, vegetable oils, etc.) New research published in the journal Appetite(1) shows that omega-3 fatty acids can be powerful modulators of appetite.
An eight-week study of 232 overweight or obese volunteers showed significant reductions in appetite and hunger following supplementation with common omega-3 oils. “The most important finding of this study is that subjects who eat a dinner rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids feel less hunger and more full directly after and two hours after than their counterparts fed with the low long chain omega-3 fatty acids diet,” the researchers wrote. “This observation indicates that long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulate hunger signals.”
The most potent source of omega-3 oils I’ve ever found is the new Moxxor Green-Lipped Mussel extract from New Zealand. Although it’s a tiny capsule, the nutritional potency of the oils is quite remarkable, and that’s why we’ve chosen to partner with Moxxor to introduce this product to the natural health marketplace while helping create solid income streams for distributors who wish to be part of this person-to-person product sharing network.
Over 1,000 people have already joined the NaturalNews Moxxor team, and we’re just getting started. If you’re interested in learning more about Moxxor, you can listen to my audio introduction of Moxxor here: http://www.naturalnews.com/moxor/MoxorT…

The benefit of adding a potent omega-3 supplement to your diet is that it offers a multitude of additional health benefits beyond the appetite modulation potential. Marine omega-3 lipids also help support and enhance the body’s neurological health, cardiovascular health, moods and cognitive function, response to inflammation and even skin and hair health. Watch the Flash presentation above to learn more.
NaturalNews does have a direct financial tie to Moxxor: We are representing the supplement and using the generated income to help fund and expand our operations. We’ve already announced our $5,000 nutrition grant program as a result of our Moxxor income: http://www.naturalnews.com/024704.html
The bottom line on appetite control
Appetite can be controlled by a variety of natural supplements. It is important, however, to view weight loss as more than just a way to “trick” the body into eating less. Successful reductions in body fat absolutely must include regular cardiovascular exercise, enhancement of lean body mass, reductions in total caloric intake and an increase in superfood nutrition and hydration.
Without these elements in place, sustained fat loss is simply not possible. There is no single magic pill that can cause you to look fit and slim. Achieving that result will require lifelong changes in your diet and the regular pursuit of cardiovascular exercise activities.
When you do those things, appetite suppressant supplements can make your journey easier, but they are not a replacement for regular exercise and a smart diet.

American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo
Conference unveils nutrition news for the brain, the body and the planet
By Janet Helm
Chicago Tribune
New strategies to improve personal and planetary health were major themes of the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo that ended Tuesday in Chicago.
Here are a few highlights from the four-day conference, which attracted more than 10,000 food and nutrition professionals from around the world.
A SILENT EPIDEMIC
Researchers believe Baby Boomers may be victim to a debilitating condition called sarcopenia that’s become a silent epidemic in this country.
Unfortunately, most people may not even be familiar with the term, so they’re doing little to avoid this progressive loss of muscle mass, said Douglas Paddon-Jones, a researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
Regular exercise is vital, but so is the amount, type and timing of the protein we eat. To stimulate muscle growth, it’s best to evenly divide your protein throughout the day (about 30 grams per meal) instead of loading up on protein at the end of the day at dinner. The steady supply appears to be best for triggering muscle growth.
Choose a high-quality protein source that’s rich in leucine, a powerful amino acid that stimulates protein synthesis and muscle growth. Top sources include lentils, beef, salmon, peanuts, walnuts and eggs.
To maximize muscle growth, it’s best to eat protein closer to when you exercise. Studies show that protein synthesis and muscle growth is enhanced when protein-rich foods are consumed before and after physical activity.
But eating more protein than the recommended amount is not necessarily better, said Paddon-Jones. His research suggests there is a ceiling effect with protein. A 4-ounce portion of lean beef was shown to be effective in protecting muscle mass, yet there was no additional benefit by increasing the portion to 12 ounces.
FEEDING YOUR BRAIN
The brain has been an overlooked organ until recently. Other parts of the body, from our hearts to our waistlines, have dominated the discussions about nutrition. Now our noggin is getting its share of attention.
Researchers now recognize that several nutrients or compounds in foods may affect the brain, including enhancing mood, concentration and performance. Nutrition may even help improve memory and slow cognitive decline associated with aging.
Joseph Hibbeln, who heads the nutritional neurochemistry section for the National Institutes of Health, presented new research on DHA omega-3 fatty acids (DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid), the type of good fats found in fish. He believes our “seafood deficient diets” may be having negative consequences in the U.S.
Studies show that brain health dramatically improves by increasing DHA omega-3s, including fighting depression and improving psychiatric conditions. One recent study found that increasing DHA omega-3s in the diets of prisoners helped to curb aggression and significantly reduced violent behaviors once they were released.
Hibbeln believes that unwarranted warnings about mercury in fish have scared people away from eating the two to three servings per week that are needed to reach optimal levels of DHA omega-3.
John Foxe, a neuroscientist from the City College of New York, shared new research on theanine, a type of amino acid that is found only in tea. Increasing intake of theanine helped improve people’s ability to focus and perform on tests. The beneficial effects were even more significant when theanine was combined with caffeine in the amounts equivalent to five or six cups of tea.
EATING GREEN
Several speakers addressed the eco-gastronomy trend. Luckily, the same diet that’s good for our health is also good for our planet. Unfortunately, most people are not following an eating plan that protects either.
“The American diet is the SUV of eating styles,” said dietitian Kate Geagan, author of the upcoming book “Go Green, Get Lean: Trim Your Waistline with the Ultimate Low-Carbon Footprint Diet.” She said our food choices influence the environment as much as the cars we drive.
Our high meat consumption, disposable dining culture, reliance on bottled beverages and excessive calorie intake are the major factors of a planet-warming diet, according to Geagan, who said an energy-efficient diet means moving back to the kitchen from the drive-thru.
Increasingly, food and beverage companies are making changes in how they grow, manufacture, package, transport and sell products to address sustainability — an environment-friendly concept that includes everything from organic and locally grown to waste reduction, recycling and fair trade.
“Sustainability will become the most significant social movement of our time,” said Greg Stephens of the Natural Marketing Institute, who said we may soon see food packages with carbon footprint labels — a popular concept in Europe and Asia.According to this article DHA is important for our brains to enhance mood, concentration and performance.
Another valid reason to continue with my MOXXOR!

Why You Should Avoid Red Meat
Here is an interesting article I’d like to share with you from Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s E-Zine http://www.drmirkin.com/public/ezine110908.html
Finally, a Clue to Explain Why You Should Avoid Red Meat
November 9, 2008
Several years ago, Professor Ajit Varki of the University of California, San Diego discovered a molecule called Neu5Gc that appears in the tissues of every mammal except humans (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, September 29, 2003). Now he has put together the pieces of a puzzle that may explain why humans evolved with large brains and why, if we want to live into old age, we should probably avoid eating meat from any other mammals (Science, October 31, 2008).
His theory depends on evolution. Living creatures on earth started as one-celled organisms, progressed to 2 cells, and eventually to fish and birds. A mutation occurred in progressing to mammals, who developed the gene to make Neu5Gc. Mammals progressed to apes and Neanderthals, and as humans evolved, Neu5Gc added a single oxygen atom to become a different molecule called Neu5Ac. So Neu5Gc is found in all mammals and their milks except humans. It is not in fish or birds. Interestingly, the Neu5Ac molecule explains why humans are the only mammal to suffer from malaria. The malaria parasite cannot enter a cell until it grabs onto the Neu5Ac on the surface of human cells.
Many epidemiological studies show that people who eat red meat are at increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, at least 17 different cancers, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, arthritis and asthma. Scientists have blamed saturated fats or burnt fats, but this does not explain why red meat is linked to all of these diseases while poultry, fish or saturated fats from plants are not.
Dr. Varki proposes another theory. When humans ingest the flesh or milk of any mammal, they absorb Neu5Gc and treat it the same way as an invading germ, so they make antibodies against it. This turns on their immunity and keeps it active so it eventually attacks the host itself, the human body. This is called chronic inflammation, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, cancers and so forth.
Since humans cannot make Neu5Gc, any amount found in human cells come from the mammals that they have eaten. Neu5Gc is found in high levels in tumors, with the highest levels in metastasizing tumors. In our food supply, Dr. Varki found very high levels of Neu5Gc in beef, pork, lamb and goat, and moderately high amounts in milk and cheese. Low levels are found in turkey, duck, chicken and eggs; and negligible amounts occur in plants and seafood.
I stopped eating meat many years ago, and this report makes me even more convinced that it should be avoided. I eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts, as well as fish and shellfish. Eggs, long thought to be a harmful high- cholesterol food, now appear to be a healthful dietary staple. While poultry appears to be a healthful food according to Dr. Varki’s theory, I still do not eat it. I do not drink milk and now plan to limit cheese as well.
*******************************************************
Glad I choose not to eat red meat ! There are numerous reasons why we should not eat red meat. This article adds yet another reason why we should not.

Difference between Moxxor and cheaper green-lipped mussel products
Monday November 10, 2008 Mike Adams (www.naturalnews.com) NaturalNews Moxor team leader wrote the following:
Some people have been asking about the differences between Moxor and cheaper green-lipped mussel products. Here’s an answer on the difference between Moxor and a product called “Sea Mussel” from Blue Dragon: (answer provided by Jeremy, the Moxor science advisor):
Thanks for your question relating to the Sea Mussel capsules from Blue Dragon.
You should be aware there are a number of very significant dfferences between Moxor and Blue Dragon;
1 – The freeze-dried powder in Blue Dragon has come from cooked mussels as a by-product rejected from the food industry due to its size or over cooking. The efficacy or effectiveness doesn’t even compare with Moxor.
2 – 150mg of the extract in Moxor is the same as 3000mg of Blue Drago mussel powder.
3 – The Blue Dragon mussel powder will not provide the same anti-inflamatory effect that Moxor will provide as the omega-3’s it contains will have been oxidized in the cooking and freeze-drying process.
4 – Moxor only uses greenlip mussels that have been selected for our proprietary extraction and does not use “seconds” from the food industry.
5 – Moxor does not remove the flesh of the mussel from the shell by using heat.
6 – Moxor does not use a 24 hour freeze-drying process that allows oxidation over this period.
7 – Moxor will contain 20 times the amount of Omega-3’s that the Blue Dragon mussel powder contains.
Mike Adams has shown why MOXXOR is the better choice for a mussel based omega-3 supplement. Thanks Mike!

The good oil for baby-boomers
“This is a call to action for baby boomers … our message is start consuming omega-3 now.”
After childhood years being admonished to eat their veges, the baby-boomer generation is now being told to eat more oily fish.
The fish contains long-chain omega-3, credited in an Australian report issued in NZ yesterday with cutting the risk of chronic ailments including cardiovascular disease.
The report says baby-boomers aged 43 to 62 could provide huge savings for the health system if they consumed the recommended intakes of omega-3.
That equates to about two or three 150g serves of oily fish a week, fish oil capsules or liquid, or other foods enriched with marine omega-3.
Wendy Morgan, nutrition adviser for Sydney’s Omega-3 Centre, told a functional foods and edible oils conference in Auckland that in the next 25 years the number of New Zealanders over 65 would double, with huge implications for the health sector.
Mrs Morgan said the centre’s report pulled together Australian research which showed the benefits of eating oily fish, or consuming fish oil, as a source of long-chain omega-3.
She said there was “interesting” but not yet conclusive evidence of its benefits for problems such as obesity, diabetes, depression and dementia.
There was, however, strong evidence that omega-3 reduced the risks of heart disease, eye problems, and rheumatoid arthritis.
One study, for example, showed that eating recommended amounts of oily fish reduced by up to 75 per cent the onset of macular degeneration, causing loss of vision and possibly blindness.
Not only did omega-3 cut the risk of heart disease but it was even more powerful in preventing a second heart attack by up to 45 per cent.
Mrs Morgan said the overall benefits were savings to the health system from the treatment of chronic diseases in the ageing population and improved quality of life for the individuals.
The research showed baby-boomers were often already on special diets and interested in nutrition, but their intake of oily fish was not high.
“This is a call to action for baby boomers … our message is start consuming omega-3 now.”
Mrs Morgan said the actual intake was estimated at only about one fifth of what was needed to make a difference.
Long-chain omega-3 was found mostly in fish like salmon and sardines. While it was present in meat, the chains were not as longand therefore less valuable.
Mrs Morgan said omega-3 was found in every cell in the body but needed to be regularly replenished.
It was important in diet throughout a person’s life, right from when a baby was in the womb.
Mrs Morgan said that while awareness levels were increasing, people were still not eating enough omega-3 and doctors were partly to blame for not telling patients of its benefits.
A United States study had shown that while most doctors knew about omega-3, and that it was beneficial, only 17 per cent remembered to tell patients with heart disease.
Mrs Morgan said the work of the Omega-3 Centre, a non-profit organisation, was supported by the Australian Heart Foundation and partly funded by commercial interests.
THE DOSE
Recommended average daily dose of long-chain omega-3:
* 500mg to reduce risk of heart disease.
* 1000mg if you already have heart disease.
* 3000mg a day if you have high triglyceride levels or rheumatoid arthritis (check with doctor first).

Preventing Alzheimer’s with Omega-3 fatty acids
Read an interesting article today posted on expnews@theexpositor.com about Omega-3 fatty acids and alzheimer’s disease. I do want to share this information with you. It is brief and to the point.
Preventing Alzheimer’s with Omega-3 fatty acids
Posted By DR. RICHARDBELIVEAU
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing health concern that affects 24 million people worldwide, with 4.5 million new cases each year (the equivalent of one new case every seven seconds). Are there efficient ways to slow down the development of this disease?
Alzheimer’s is generally characterized by short-term memory losses, problems performing simple tasks and increasingly strange behaviours.
When it starts to progress, this attack of the brain functions becomes more and more obvious with the onset of language disorders, visual recognition problems and trouble integrating outside information. At the final stages of the disease, patients lose the ability to communicate and recognize faces, cannot control basic physiological functions (bladder, intestine) and must receive continuous care until they pass away. On average, people suffering from Alzheimer’s die four to 10 years after their diagnosis.
Alzheimer’s disease is distinguished by two main anomalies at the nerve cells’ level: neurofibrillary tangles, present inside the neurons, and amyloid plaques (or senile plaques), located outside these cells. The death of neuronal cells following the formation of these deposits results, with time, in a significant reduction of brain tissue volume. Alzheimer’s disease is therefore not a simple “madness”, a loss of contact with reality due to an imbalance in brain functions. It is a degenerative disease that even interferes with the integrity of the brain.
FEEDING THE BRAIN
The risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is between 10 per cent and 15 per cent, which means that about 15 people out of 100 will develop the disease before they reach the age of 85.
Contrary to popular belief, hereditary factors are only responsible for a minority of Alzheimer’s cases (25 per cent), the vast majority (75 per cent) being caused by a complex interaction between the genetic material and numerous factors associated with lifestyle.
Among these factors, several studies have recently shown that our diet can greatly influence our risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s during our lifetime. For example, it is more and more clear that obesity is a factor that contributes to the development of Alzheimer’s: obese people have high levels of amyloid peptides in their blood, which play a role in the destruction of nerve cells, a key phenomenon in the progressive loss of intellectual functions.
This connection between obesity and Alzheimer’s disease is especially alarming when we consider the growing number of obese people in the population.
Conversely, studies conducted in past years also show that people who regularly drink small amounts of red wine and those who often consume green tea suffer less from Alzheimer’s. In both cases, this protective effect is apparently linked to the exceptional content of these beverages in certain polyphenols (resveratrol in red wine and EGCG in green tea), which decrease the risk of developing the disease by reducing the formation of senile plaques.
Finally, even if the data currently available are still preliminary, it is also interesting to note that other food sources rich in polyphenols, such as pomegranate or blueberries, have also been identified as foods that can delay the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
These omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are essential to the development of the brain and retina cells and play a crucial part in the transmission of the nerve impulse. This positive impact of omega-3 fatty acids on neuronal functions also seems to play a determining role in the prevention of Alzheimer’s.
Many studies have shown that people who consumed the highest levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the main long-chain fatty acid, had a significantly lower risk of suffering from this disease.
The consumption of at least one serving of fatty fish (sardines, mackerel, herring) per week results in a 35 per cent reduction of the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to people who almost never consume any.
The mechanisms involved in this protective effect are still misunderstood, but we believe that omega-3 fatty acids slow down the formation of amyloid plaques and protect neurons from toxic effects caused by these structures. A recent study conducted by Dr Frédéric Calon’s team at Laval University in Quebec City supports this hypothesis. Using mice genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer’s disease, researchers discovered that the animals that had a diet rich in fat, but poor in omega-3 fatty acids showed a strong increase of certain proteins involved in the formation of amyloid plaques. According to the study’s authors, these results suggest that the typical North American diet (lots of fat, but few omega-3 fatty acids) could largely contribute to the disease incidence increase.
As you can see, we can control several aspects of our diet to reduce our risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. We should absolutely take advantage of this opportunity. Not to mention that applying these principles also helps effectively fight other serious diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Oily fish may boost prostate cancer survival rate: Study11/24/08.
An increased intake of fish and omega-3-rich seafood may improve prostate cancer survival by 38 per cent, according to a new study. The prospective cohort study with 20,167 men also found that men who ate five portions of fish per week had a 48 per cent improved survival rate from the disease than men who consumed only one portion per week. Findings of the study, led by Jorge Chavarro from Harvard School of Public Health, are published in the current issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Susan Lark, MD Speaks Out Against the Newest Osteoporosis Drug, Reclast
Susan Lark, MD Speaks Out Against the Newest Osteoporosis Drug, Reclast
Susan Lark, MD, noted medical researcher and women’s health practitioner, has spoken out against the newest prescription osteoporosis medication on the market, Reclast, as well as other oral bisphosphonates such as Boniva, Actonel, and Fosamax.
Potomac, MD (PRWEB) November 28, 2008 — Susan Lark, MD, noted medical researcher and women’s health practitioner, has spoken out against the newest prescription osteoporosis medication on the market, Reclast, as well as other oral bisphosphonates such as Boniva, Actonel, and Fosamax.
“Without a doubt, the newest osteoporosis drug on the market, Reclast, is not the miracle drug its marketers want you to believe it is. While this once-yearly IV treatment is touted as safe and convenient, its side effects far outweigh its benefits,” says Dr. Lark. “In fact, all bisphosphonates should be avoided because they can cause gastrointestinal side effects, chemical burning of the esophagus, infection and death of bone tissue in the jaw (called osteonecrosis), and kidney toxicity. And Reclast, in particular, has been shown to cause heart rhythm abnormalities like atrial fibrillation. These side effects are dangerous and hardly seem worth it, especially when there are extremely safe, natural ways to prevent and treat bone loss.” In addition, according to Dr. Lark, bisphosphonates don’t actually stimulate new bone growth. Instead, they slow the rate of loss of old bone by blocking the action of osteoclasts–cells that are meant to dismantle old, damaged bone tissue so it can be replaced by new tissue, made by osteoblasts. This means the bones in a woman taking a bisphosphonate are increasingly constructed of over-aged, damaged bone cells that have been encouraged to linger longer than is good for the skeleton at large.
When it comes to preventing and treating osteoporosis, regulating the body’s pH–and specifically the pH of blood–is the real secret to prevention. Blood is slightly alkaline and has a pH of 7.35 to 7.45. To keep the blood alkaline, the body uses, in part, the alkaline mineral reserves within the bones–including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. The more acidic the blood pH is, the more depletion occurs, and the greater the risk of osteoporosis. Unfortunately, as women age, the body’s pH-regulating system begins to decline in efficiency due to aging, stress, pollutants, illness, injury, and eating the acidic foods that are very common in the American diet.
To maintain an alkaline pH and prevent osteoporosis naturally, Dr. Lark recommends four steps:
1. Cutting down on acidic foods, including red meat, dairy products, alcohol, carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, refined sugar, and most artificial sweeteners. Also cut down consumption of acidic fruits, including citrus, apples, most berries, plums, apricots, pineapple, and raisins.
2. Focusing on alkalinizing foods, such as most vegetables, gluten-free whole grains (brown rice, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, and corn), legumes, seafood, eggs, and nonacidic fruits (such as papaya, mango, melon, pears, and bananas). Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild salmon, tuna, and mackerel, are also important.
3. Building up mineral reserves in the bones by taking daily: 1,000-2,000 mg of calcium carbonate; 500-750 mg of magnesium oxide; 15-25 mg of zinc; 20-50 mg of silica; 3-6 mg of boron; 40 mcg of vitamin K; 400-800 IU of vitamin D; and 1,000-3,000 mg of mineral-buffered vitamin C (in divided doses).
4. Getting extra buffering support by taking sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is integral to the body’s natural buffering system. A half-hour before breakfast and an hour and a half after dinner, add ½ teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate to purified water and drink it. (If tingling in the arms, legs, or lips; bloating; gassiness; or anxiety are experienced, discontinue use and drink something acidic like black coffee or tea, or the juice of half a lemon in water.)
Dr. Lark has devoted her career to raising awareness of women’s health issues, such as PMS, obesity, hormone replacement therapy and osteoporosis. She pioneered the use of women’s self-care treatments based on diet, nutrition, exercise and stress management, and has penned twelve books on women’s health and healing. Her most recent title is Hormone Revolution.
Her monthly newsletter, Women’s Wellness Today, and her web site, Dr. Lark’s free biweekly e-newsletter, which presents breaking health and beauty news along with lifestyle tips, easy recipes and simple exercises for health and beauty.
Thank you Dr. Susan Lark for the above information that every woman should read in regard to osteoporosis drugs. Taking my Moxxor omega-3 supplement is one step in the way of protecting my self from osteoporosis naturally.

90 Percent of U.S. Infant Formula May Be Contaminated with Melamine
![]() |
90 Percent of U.S. Infant Formula May Be Contaminated with Melamine; FDA Abruptly Declares Chemical Safe for BabiesMike Adams, NaturalNews Editor (www.naturalnews.com) wrote this article on Saturday, November 29, 2008. This is a must read article for all mothers and mothers-to-be. |
(NaturalNews) Up to 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States may be contaminated with trace amounts of melamine, the toxic chemical linked to kidney damage, according to recent tests. The FDA’s test results, which the agency hid from the public and only released after the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request, showed that Nestle, Mead Johnson and Enfamil infant formula products were all contaminated with melamine.
The AP is also reporting that Abbott Laboratories conducted its own in-house tests that detected trace levels of melamine in its formula products. Together, these infant formula manufacturers make about 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States.
Prior to these test results being made public, the FDA had published a document on its website that explained there was no safe level of melamine contamination in infant formula. Specifically, the FDA stated, “FDA is currently unable to establish any level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formula that does not raise public health concerns.”
Once tests found melamine in U.S.-made formula products, however, the FDA changed its story. As of today, the FDA has now officially declared melamine to be safe in infant formula as long as the contamination level is less than one part per million (1 ppm).
Astonishingly: The FDA has no new science to justify its abrupt decision declaring melamine to be safe!
Protecting Big Business instead of American babies
Rather than being based on science, the FDA’s decision appears to be based entirely on creating cover for U.S. infant formula manufacturers whose products were found to be contaminated with melamine. The “acceptable” level of contamination (1 ppm) is conveniently just above the levels found in U.S. infant formula products, thus placing U.S. infant formula in the “safe” contamination level category.
And yet the FDA has conducted no safety testing whatsoever to determine whether 1ppm of melamine is safe for infants to consume. There is no science involved in this decision whatsoever. Rather than this decision being based on science, the FDA is once again resorting to politically-motivated decisions that seek to protect the profits of Big Business rather than the safety of infants and children.
Recall that the FDA also recently declared Bisphenol-A to be safe for infants to consume, even while countries like Canada banned the chemical from baby bottles. The FDA, it seems has never met a corporate-sponsored chemical it didn’t like.
Where did the melamine come from?
Laughingly, the FDA claims the 1ppm of melamine in U.S. infant formula must have come from the manufacturing machines or food packaging equipment. And yet the AP is reporting that the expected level of melamine contamination from manufacturing equipment is only 15 ppb (parts per billion).
But the FDA’s own tests on Mead Johnson infant formula reveal it to contain 245 ppb, or 1600% more than what would be expected to exists due to melamine contamination from manufacturing equipment.
There are two really important questions that any intelligent consumer should be asking about all this:
Question #1) If the manufacturing and packaging equipment is contaminated with melamine, does this mean that ALL food products containing milk protein are similarly contaminated? The same companies that make infant formula also make Slim Fast, Ensure and Boost — all are milk protein-based meal replacement products containing many of the same ingredients as infant formula. Are they contaminated with melamine, too?
Question #2) If manufacturing and packaging machinery should only result in melamine contamination levels of 15 ppb, and yet 245 ppb were found in the infant formula, then where did all the extra melamine come from? The FDA has no explanation for this and seems to hope people will forget to ask.
Two theories of melamine contamination
I offer two theories to explain the melamine contamination of these products. Obviously, the contamination could not be caused by the manufacturing and packaging of the product, because the melamine levels already found in U.S. infant formula products greatly exceed the expected levels from such manufacturing and packaging. The following two theories may explain the additional levels of detected melamine.
Theory #1: The infant formula is adulterated with melamine
This is what happened in China: Infant formula manufacturers added melamine to their milk protein to bulk up the product without adding much cost (melamine is much cheaper than milk protein). Because melamine’s chemical profile is strikingly similar to milk protein, it can often fool simple protein analysis tests and appear to be legitimate.
If infant formula products use any milk protein from China, it could very easily have been adulterated with melamine. However, this is just a theory, and NaturalNews has no evidence that U.S. infant formula manufacturers actually used milk protein from China. Thus, we do not believe Theory #1 to be correct. Theory #2, below, seems more likely.
Theory #2: U.S. dairy operations are using animal feed contaminated with melamine
Because melamine is passed through cow’s milk, the contamination of U.S. dairy cows with melamine through their feed could result in high melamine concentrations in the resulting milk proteins.
China has already admitted that melamine has been detected in alarming quantities in animal feed there, and tests have already shown chickens to be contaminated with the chemical. The question today is this: Do U.S. dairy farms use animal feed containing ingredients imported from China?
If so, then we may have a problem here that’s much, much bigger than infant formula. We may have a dairy industry that’s producing melamine-contaminated milk, which could mean that virtually all milk, yoghurt, butter and cheese produced in the U.S. might be contaminated with some level of melamine.
Again, NaturalNews has no proof that this is the situation, but the melamine must have come from somewhere. It didn’t just spontaneously generate in the infant formula as the FDA would seemingly want us to believe. If the milk proteins in infant formula are contaminated with melamine, then it stands to reason that the milk proteins used throughout the food supply may also be contaminated.
We may, indeed, be looking at an industry-wide problem here. Powdered milk, meal replacement products and even milk protein drinks may all be contaminated with melamine at levels similar to the infant formula products.
Because you have to follow the logic here: Either the infant formula manufacturers ADDED melamine to their products (highly unlikely), or the entire milk product industry has a melamine problem.
You can’t logically conclude that these infant formula manufacturers somehow got all the melamine-contaminated milk proteins but everybody else got melamine-free milk proteins. Milk proteins are a commodity in the food industry, and milk from thousands of different cows can all be mixed together in a single pound of milk protein. What could be happening here is that one dairy farm may have highly-contaminated cows because it used cheap feed fillers from China.
At this point, this is all just a theory, but it’s a theory that makes sense. It makes a lot more sense than the FDA’s theory that there’s no problem and babies should just keep drinking melamine (and Bisphenol-A, for that matter…) and the press should stop asking questions.
Secret tests and public lies
There’s no doubt that these infant formula manufacturers are pursuing the very same contamination theories I’m describing here. They’re probably scrambling to test their milk protein sources, trying to figure out where all the extra melamine is coming from.
As usual, they’ll try to keep the test results secret, preventing this from exploding into a much larger public health issue. The FDA, for its part, will continue to conduct any actual science in secret, preventing the public from knowing the tests results unless it is sued by organizations like the AP.
That’s assuming the FDA conducts any science at all, because now the FDA believes it can declare contaminants to be safe at a level it just invents on the spot, without conducting any science whatsoever. The FDA is playing “Wheel of Fortune” with public safety (http://www.naturalnews.com/023681.html), and it’s relying on guessing games – rather than actual science – to declare safety levels of chemicals it doesn’t even understand.
The upshot of all this is really quite simple: People who feed their babies manufactured, mainstream infant formula products are fools! If there was ever a reason to breastfeed your baby, this is it. And if you’re looking for truly safe infant formula products, go with natural brands such as Genesis Organics Goat Milk Formula (www.GenesisOrganics.com) or other “natural” brands that don’t use cheap cow’s milk proteins.
After all, it’s quite clear at this point that the FDA doesn’t care about your baby’s health. You’re the only one who can protect your baby from melamine. The FDA flat out refuses to do so. In fact, it’s doing the opposite by declaring melamine to be safe!
So stop buying conventional infant formula products and start feeding your baby what it was meant to consume: Human breast milk from a healthy, well-nourished mom who eats lots of omega-3 oils and superfoods.
That’s the best infant formula in the world. And by the way, human babies shouldn’t be drinking bovine milk in the first place. The whole infant formula industry was a scam long before melamine came along. Now it’s a contaminated scam.
Thank you Mike Adams for your information and thoughts. Scary isn’t it?

Dr. Oz states Omega-3 fatty acids can help lower triglycerides
Q. What causes high triglycerides? What can I do to lower them? — Anonymous
A. Triglycerides have a bad reputation, but these fatty molecules serve a useful purpose: storing energy until you need it. However, like wine, chocolate and other basically good things, too much can do you in. Levels above 150 mg/dL of triglycerides in your blood can thicken the walls of your arteries and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
Bringing down your triglycerides to healthy levels calls for some serious waist management. That’s because belly fat — specifically, the apron of fat inside your belly known as the omentum — is a key player in raising your triglyceride levels (not to mention your cholesterol count and pants size). Your ideal waist size is 32½ inches if you’re female, 35 if you’re male.
What you eat can bring these fats down, too. Serve yourself plenty of fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, including mackerel, lake trout, herring and salmon. Cut out sugary, refined foods that spike insulin levels and, in turn, raise triglycerides. And, sorry, but give up alcohol. Even a little sends triglycerides skyward.
Submit questions at RealAge.com. Dr. Oz appears on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and gives more advice in his podcast at suntimes.com.

Omega-3 fatty acid update
The University of Maryland’s Medical Center website: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/omega-3-000316.htm has some great information about Omega-3 fatty acids. It is well presented. Information is provided on Uses; Dietary Sources; Available Forms; How to Take it; Precautions; Possible Interactions and Supporting Research.
There are 30 different health topics listed under ’Uses of This Supplement’ posted to the right of the 1st page. You can click on each one for further information if you choose to do so. This list includes such topics as asthma, breast cancer, depression, macular degeneration, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke etc.
Here is the Overview listed on The University of Maryland’s Medical Center website :
“Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other marine life such as algae and krill, certain plants (including purslane), and nut oils. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week. It is advised that pregnant women and mothers, nursing mothers, young children, and women who might become pregnant not eat several types of fish, including swordfish, shark, and king mackerel. These individuals should also limit consumption of other fish, including albacore tuna, salmon, and herring. They can take omega-3 fatty acids in quality dietary supplements that are certified mercury-free by a reputable third-party lab.
There are three major types of omega 3 fatty acids that are ingested in foods and used by the body: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Once eaten, the body converts ALA to EPA and DHA, the two types of omega-3 fatty acids more readily used by the body. Extensive research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be particularly important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. In fact, infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include extreme tiredness (fatigue), poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.
It is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet, as these two substances work together to promote health. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. An inappropriate balance of these essential fatty acids contributes to the development of disease while a proper balance helps maintain and even improve health. A healthy diet should consist of roughly 2 – 4 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. The typical American diet tends to contain 14 – 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, and many researchers believe this imbalance is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the United States.
In contrast, however, the Mediterranean diet consists of a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and many studies have shown that people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. It also contains another fatty acid, omega-9 fatty acids, which have been reported to help lower risks associated with cancer and heart disease. The Mediterranean diet does not include much meat (which is high in omega-6 fatty acids) and emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption.”
My choice is to take an omega-3 supplement called Moxxor to maintain a healthy balance of omega-3s and omega-6s. These small capsules do not cause flatulence, bloating or belching for myself. Moxxor is backed by a 100% money back guarantee and is tested by a reputable 3rd party lab. I save $10 per month by using Moxxor’s autoship program. The convience of Moxxor delivered right to my front door is another plus.
Thank you University of Md Med Center for your omega-3 fatty acid information. I can only hope that this information will hit home to my readers on just how important it is to include omega 3s as part of your nutritional plan.

Omega-3 fatty acids key to cell health
Omega-3 fatty acids key to cell health
Adding 2 -3 tbs of flaxseed daily to my breakfast smoothie has caused my thyroid gland to swell more than once in the past. I now alternate between flaxseed, chia seed and hemp powder for varitey and have reduced the amt. of flaxseed to 1 tbs.
Eating wild caught cold-water fatty fish 2-3 times a week is not my choice for omega-3’s due to mercury, dioxins and PCBs. My choice is to take a pure, potent omega-3 supplement called Moxxor.

News Release – Mercury Mischief at FDA
Agency Pushing Radical Plan to Promote Mercury-Laced Seafood Diet for Pregnant Women and Children
Published December 12, 2008
WASHINGTON –- Documents obtained by Environmental Working Group (EWG) show that officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are pressing to reverse the agency’s current recommendations that pregnant women and children limit their seafood consumption due to risks of exposure to mercury – an extremely harmful neurotoxin found at high levels in a number of popular seafood species such as tuna, swordfish and mackerel.
An internal FDA report, stamped “CLOSE HOLD,” claims that pregnant women and children – the two most vulnerable populations – should be encouraged to eat any quantity of any type of seafood, contradicting the current position of the FDA and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that these groups should sharply limit their intake of seafood, especially tuna and other types with high mercury levels.
The report, entitled “An Evaluation of Risk to U.S. Consumers from Methylmercury in Commercial Fishing Products, Including a Quantitative Assessment of Risk and Beneficial Health Effects from Fish,” argues that “the net effect on fetal neurodevelopment from eating commercial fish containing methylmercury…is not necessarily adverse and could in fact be beneficial….”
In a scathing internal memo, dated December 5, 2008, EPA officials blasted the FDA proposal as “over –simplified,” with “serious scientific flaws.” They concluded that “this is not a document that EPA should endorse as it does not reach the level of scientific rigor routinely demonstrated by the Agency.”
The FDA document contends that the health benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids in fish outweigh the risk from exposure to any level of mercury – a toxic metal linked to a number of serious brain and nervous system disorders.
“This is an astonishingly cynical and irresponsible move that jeopardizes the health of all American children,” said EWG Executive Director and co-founder Richard Wiles. “There are many sources of omega-3s that contain no mercury at all, but FDA has failed to promote them. You only get one chance with a child’s developing brain. The FDA is willing to gamble it away for a few more dollars for the tuna industry.”
EWG analyses have repeatedly shown that unrestricted consumption of popular fish that are heavily contaminated with mercury, like canned tuna, will expose a fetus to levels of mercury many times above what EPA considers safe. Research by Kathryn Mahaffey, formerly EPA’s top scientist on mercury toxicity, shows that blood mercury concentrations were seven times higher in women who ate fish more than twice a week, (as proposed by the FDA report) compared to women who had not eaten fish during the previous month.
The medical literature is rife with cases of people who have suffered chronic and debilitating mercury poisoning from eating three to four meals per week of large ocean-dwelling fish — exactly what FDA is recommending.
“The FDA was once a fearsome protector of the public health,” said Wiles. “Now it’s nothing more than a patsy for polluters,” said Wiles. “This is the last nail in the coffin for FDA’s credibility.”
“One in 6 pregnancies in the United States are to women with too much mercury in their bodies,” said EWG Senior Scientist Sonya Lunder. “These women can get the essential omega-3 fats from fortified eggs, margarine, walnuts, with none of the mercury. Why take any risks?”
“We urge you to block this eleventh-hour push by FDA to pad the wallets of the seafood industry at the expense of our nation’s children,” Wiles wrote in a letter to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson.

The You Docs: The ‘new’ fat that actually can make you thin
December 23, 2008
The You Docs: The ‘new’ fat that actually can make you thin.
The You Docs – Mike Roizen and Mehmet Oz – are authors of the best-selling “You: The Owner’s Manual” and “You: On a Diet.”
Maybe you’re not what you eat, after all. Cutting-edge research suggests that the way out of the obesity crisis – and the diabetes, heart disease, strokes and cancer that it brings – isn’t to embrace your inner fat-phobe. Instead, it’s possible that eating fat could make you skinnier than a MacBook Air.
You read that correctly. But don’t order that double-cheeseburger deluxe and the chocolate shake. We’re talking about the right fat – the one and only docosahexaenoic acid (DHA for short); the ultimate form of omega-3 fatty acid.
DHA is the good stuff found in fish-oil capsules and in salmon, trout, herring and mackerel. The fish don’t make it; they get it from the algae they eat. So if you don’t like the taste of fish or don’t want the anti-clotting effect of EPA, you can get the DHA directly from algae. Renowned for protecting hearts against deadly irregular beats, as well as lowering depression risk, cooling inflammation and helping babies grow healthy brains, DHA also has been shown recently to boost fat-burning, discourage excess padding inside the abdomen and promote weight loss.
In one study of overweight people, guys who took daily fish-oil capsules or ate fish three times a week lost 2.2 pounds more in four weeks than those who didn’t. (In this study, women’s weight loss wasn’t affected, but – whew – it was in other studies.) And it’s good for more than your waist: When 65 paunchy Australians added fish or sunflower oil to their regular diets, the fish-oil group saw heart-threatening triglycerides fall 14 percent and heart-protecting HDL cholesterol rise by 10 percent after just 12 weeks. No such benefits from the other fat; the DHA group won hands down.
What’s going on? Fish oil, and specifically DHA, seems to discourage dangerous visceral fat, the kind that wraps itself around internal organs, pumping fatty acids and inflammatory compounds into your bloodstream 24/7. Those dangerous substances raise your risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some cancers. In laboratory studies and some human ones, fish oil – or more specifically, the DHA component – also switched on the gene that produces a handy fat-burning protein called adiponectin.
Aim for 600 milligrams of DHA per day from algae or from fish-oil capsules. Most fish-oil brands contain DHA plus EPA, another omega-3 that your body converts to DHA. If a supplement lists both, pick one that has a combined total of 2,000 mg of DHA plus EPA daily. If it has DHA alone, you need only 600 mg. Even if you eat fish regularly or get omega-3s from other sources – see below – getting a daily DHA dose from a capsule is smart nutritional insurance.
Stock up on walnuts and flax, too. Of course, fatty, oily fish is a super source of DHA. But you also can get it through walnuts, ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil. They are great sources of plant-based omega-3s called alpha-linolenic acid, which your body converts to DHA. Don’t stop eating fish and these other superfoods just because you’re taking capsules. More good fats are OK, and these foods are packed with plenty of other nutrients your body needs.
Don’t upset your ethics or your stomach. Vegetarian? In addition to walnuts and flaxseed, capsules of algae oil (also called algal oil, sometimes just called DHA on the label) are a good vegetarian source of DHA.
Get some into your kids. Children also need plenty of good fats, though in smaller doses. We recommend 300 mg a day of DHA for kids weighing 50 to 100 pounds, 200 mg for kids under 50 pounds, and 90 mg a day for those under age 6. For older kids who can swallow pills, try algae-oil capsules – they’re not as bulky as fish oil. For younger kids, try mixing the right amount of liquid fish oil or algae oil into a breakfast smoothie.

Omega-3, 6, and 9 and How They Add Up
Dow AgroSciences has a web page in regard to Omega-3, 6, and 9s.
It is brief and colorful. Click here to check it out :http://www.dowagro.com/PublishedLiterature/dh_0163/0901b80380163da9.pdf?filepath=omega9oils/pdfs/noreg/010-93037.pdf&fromPage=GetDoc
FYI – Dow AgroSciences as financial ties to canola and sunflower oils as seen here: http://www.omega-9oils.com/
Remember that one of the most important things we can do is to increase our intake of the Omega-3 fats from such sources as fish oil, krill oil or green lip mussel oil – and reduce our intake of Omega-6 fats found in vegetable oils.
Omega-6, Linoleic Acid (LA), is found in corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oil. The typical American diet consists of too many omega-6 fatty acids.
Teya Skae wrote “Essentially, it is better to take fish oil supplements than to consume mercury-polluted fish (like tuna, swordfish and salmon) to obtain our daily requirement of Omega-3’s. Relying on flaxseed or (worse) canola oil to meet our daily needs of Omega-3’s will not do the job and finally, avoiding all vegetable oils in cooking (which causes oxidization) and keeping nuts/nut butters to a minimum would ensure a healthy ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 which overall should support our brains and bodies in coping with the stresses of daily living.”

I’ve chosen an omega-3 supplement called Moxxor. I save $10 a month which is a 16.5 % savings using their auto ship program. I look at Moxxor as an investment in my health – not just for the present but life long.
One more thing – love the convience of not having to remember to reorder monthly and that Moxxor is automatically delivered to my front door. Keep it simple!

Yoplait Goes rBGH-Free
Recent article of interest in “Organic Bytes” Feb.11th, 2009:
Consumer Victory of the Week: Yoplait Goes rBGH-Free
Consumer Victory of the Week: Yoplait Goes rBGH-Free Yoplait, a leading brand of yoghurt, and the 19th largest dairy producer in the U.S., has announced, that as of August 2009, it will no longer purchase milk from dairies injecting their cows with Monsanto’s controversial genetically engineered synthetic hormone, recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). Yoplait’s rejection of rBGH-tainted milk comes in the wake of a consumer campaign organized by the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, the OCA, and dozens of allied public interest organizations. Yoplait’s action is amplified by a growing number of mainstream companies who have recently turned their backs on rBGH, including Starbucks, Caribou, Cabot cheese, and Subway. For over ten years, OCA and our allies have led the charge against rBGH and other genetically engineered foods and food ingredients. Although rBGH is not allowed on organic farms and is banned in most of the industrialized world because of its threats to both animal and human health, this cruel and dangerous drug is still injected into approximately 10% of U.S. dairy cows–to force them to produce more milk. With your help, OCA and its allies will continue our campaign until Monsanto’s rBGH is driven completely off the market. Learn more

The Decision Has Been Made : Community Supported Agriculture
The recent warm spell in the Northeast USA kicked in my anticipation of working in my vegetable garden. Nothing brings me more pleasure than planting and harvesting my own organic produce. I love the sweat, dirt and sunshine!
The ‘fresh’ vegetables sold in our local grocery stores cannot compare in quality, price, nutrition or taste. Umm – the anticipation is great! But there is a downside to my gardening this year.
I have recently doubled my work hours out of necessity. This will greatly decrease the amount of available hours to enjoy working in the garden. The decision has been made to plant less veggies and to join a CSA. I will plant those veggies that are a staple in my daily juicing such as spinach and kale.
What is a CSA? “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an arrangement or partnership made between community members and a particular local farm. In a CSA farm, consumers can purchase seasonal “shares” which entitle them to weekly food allowances. Shareholders visit the farm or another pickup location at a scheduled time every week to get their food. Some CSA farmers may even deliver to your door. ” To find a CSA near you click here.
Landisdale Farm, Jonestown, PA is the CSA farm that I subscribed to. Click here for more information.
Shareholders or subscribers pay up front for the growing season. The cost and growing season vary among the different farms. Some CSA’s offer a discount for early sign-up. There are usually 2 different sized shares or boxes to sign up for depending on your need.
Buying local food keeps my dollars circulating in my community. I feel good knowing that I can make a difference by strengthening my local economy.

Genetically Modified Beet Sugar – Where Is The Choice ?
The first genetically modified (GM) sugar beet crops were harvested in the fall of 2008. These were Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beets. Another milestone for Frankenfood! The Center for Food Safety stated the U.S. EPA increased allowable levels of herbicide residue on GM sugar beets “at the request of Monsanto”. The allowable levels of glyphosate residue on sugar beet roots has increased by 5,000 percent. Thanks to the EPA, American consumers can have more pesticides in their sugar as well as more “super weeds”. Another negative impact on our health and environment – why do we let this crap happen?
A Non-Genetically Modified (GM) Beet Sugar Registry has been set up by food safety, environmental and corporate watchdog organizations. Over 70 companies have vowed not to use or sell genetically modified beet sugar. A list of companies that have signed the registry can been seen here. Do as those companies did – just say no to GM foods – choose to be a responsible consumer.
To learn more about GM foods click here. Seeds of Deception states “vast majority of processed foods contain derivatives from the four major GM crops: soy, corn, cottonseed and canola. See GM Foods at a Glance.
Now is the time to take action! “Don’t let them mess with sugar! Take the time today to send a message to some or all of the 63 major U.S. food, beverage, restaurant and candy companies that can use their market power to speak out and stop the planting of genetically modified sugar beets. “ Click Here and read the message; pick who gets your message; and then fill in the form and send message. Real quick and simple to do.
