Omega 3 Supplement Targets Bowel Cancer Risk

A purified form of omega 3, the so-called “good fat” found naturally in certain fish and nut oils, reduced dangerous polyps among people prone to bowel cancer, a study published on Thursday says.

Fifty patients were enrolled in the investigation, all with a genetic mutation that prompts the development of polyps — precancerous growths in the bowel that often develop into tumors requiring removal of large sections of intestine.

After six months, the number of polyps had risen by almost 10 percent among the placebo group but fell by 12 percent for those taking the omega 3 capsules, amounting to a difference of more than 22 percent.

Industry Responds to California Fish Oil Lawsuit

The Nutritional Business Journal posted an article March 3rd that states ” Eight dietary supplement manufacturers and marketers were named in a California lawsuit filed on March 2 that alleges some fish oil supplements have been sold containing illegally undisclosed and unnecessarily high levels of contamination with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds. The eight companies named in the lawsuit are: CVS Pharmacy Inc., General Nutrition Corp. (GNC), Now Health Group Inc., Omega Protein Inc., Pharmavite LLC, Rite Aid Corp., Solgar Inc., and TwinLab Corp. The lawsuit alleges that the companies sold fish oil, shark oil, fish liver oil and shark liver oil supplements that have PCB contamination above the so-called “safe harbor” limits set for human PCB consumption under California’s Proposition 65. That law requires companies to warn consumers about contaminant exposures. Proposition 65, passed as a ballot initiative in 1986, was passed to force consumer products to eliminate toxic chemical ingredients or reduce them below published safe harbor limits in the past.”

According to a report just published in the February issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, people at extremely high risk of developing a psychosis were found to be less likely to develop psychotic disorders after just 12 weeks of taking fish oil capsules containing omega-3 fatty acids. The study authors pointed out that omega-3 supplementation may be effective because individuals with schizophrenia have an underlying dysfunction in fatty acid metabolism.
